Dave Merrill was born in the small town of Payson, Utah and grew up in the shadows of the Wasatch Mountains. His early years were spent drawing the animals he caught in the orchards and fields he played in, and the fish and insects observed while wading and swimming in the local streams and ponds.
Dave’s appreciation of nature grew as he did and his passion to capture the images he saw won him attention. He entered calendar contests and art competitions and garnered many awards. He eventually received an academic and art talent scholarship to BYU where he received a BFA in Visual Arts, all the while working as a designer and illustrator for Word Perfect Corporation.
In 1994, he walked out the doors of corporate life, entered his studio, and began painting the outdoor scenes of nature full time and has never turned back. His paintings have since been commissioned and purchased by owners of corporations and other private collectors.
Dave’s home is nestled in a community in the hills of the Wasatch Mountains appropriately name Elk Ridge. He regularly jogs or hikes through areas where wildlife abounds and receives inspiration for the pictures he paints.
