EDWARD ALDRICH

Edward Aldrich is internationally recognized for his compelling wildlife paintings. Works that move beyond simple representation to capture the spirit, presence, and emotional depth of his subjects. As Inform Art Magazine aptly noted, “More than a faithful reproduction, the wildlife art of Edward Aldrich captures the very essence of the animal…each image becomes a stolen moment.” His paintings invite the viewer into an intimate encounter, offering not just a view of wildlife, but a felt experience of it.

Aldrich approaches his work with the belief that true wildlife art must go beyond anatomical accuracy. While his technical skill is undeniable, it is his ability to convey the inherent being, the quiet awareness, tension, and soul of an animal that defines his work. Each composition is carefully constructed to create a sense of immediacy, as though the viewer has stepped into a fleeting moment in the wild. Whether it is the watchful gaze of a predator or the stillness of a resting animal, his paintings resonate with both life and emotion.

He received his formal training at the Rhode Island School of Design, graduating in 1987. Just a few years later, at the age of 26, Aldrich achieved a significant milestone when he was juried into the Society of Animal Artists, a prestigious organization that recognizes excellence in wildlife art. His work has been featured in their renowned annual exhibition, Art and the Animal, placing him among some of the most respected wildlife artists in the world.

Aldrich’s work has also been repeatedly selected for Birds in Art at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum, one of the most competitive and respected exhibitions of avian art globally. The museum itself holds two of his works in its permanent collection, further underscoring his standing within the field. His paintings have also been featured internationally, including inclusion in a Christie's auction in London, and exhibitions at institutions such as the Gilcrease Museum.

In addition to these accolades, Aldrich was honored as the featured artist at the 32nd annual Jackson Hole Fall Arts Festival, one of the premier Western art events in the country. This recognition highlights both his prominence within the genre and his strong connection to collectors and audiences drawn to wildlife and the natural world.

Throughout his career, Aldrich has exhibited extensively across the United States and Canada and has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions, with over ten one-man shows to date. His growing recognition led to his selection as one of six artists featured in American Artist magazine’s Emerging Artists issue in August 1998, an honor further distinguished by his work appearing on the cover. His art and process have also been highlighted in Wildlife Journal, where he was featured in multiple articles.

In addition to his painting career, Aldrich is the author of Drawing and Painting Animals, published by Watson-Guptill. Featuring over 100 of his works, the book offers insight into his artistic philosophy and process, providing both collectors and aspiring artists with a deeper understanding of his approach to capturing life through paint.

Aldrich’s subjects span wildlife from around the world, though he is particularly drawn to the cat family, primates, and exotic birds—animals that allow him to explore expression, movement, and personality. Working in both watercolor and oil, he brings a versatility to his practice while maintaining a consistent focus on mood and presence.

Today, Edward Aldrich lives and works in Colorado, where he continues to observe, study, and paint the natural world. His work remains sought after by collectors who are drawn not only to his technical mastery, but to the profound connection his paintings create—moments that feel both fleeting and timeless, where the boundary between viewer and subject quietly disappears.
